TREE CARE TIPS

What do trees need?
Watering during dry spells is very important for overall tree health, because extensive drought stress can sicken a tree for many years after the conditions have occurred. Stress symptoms often present in the canopy of a tree as abnormal deadwood, poor leaf development, and off colored leaves. Usually a root system of a tree is damaged and compromised when drought conditions prevail for an extended period of time. Tree root systems are complex and critical. Healthy root systems are needed to support trees during storms. Proper watering and occasional fertilizing with an appropriate mixture and technique can help support the health of any tree root system. We have the equipment and knowledge to help.

What about pruning? What kind of pruning should be done? How often should my trees be pruned?

Most professional tree organizations advise tree pruning every three years for most large shade trees. Smaller ornamental trees may need pruning more often. Different trees require different techniques depending on the overall plans for the landscape. Large trees should be thinned lightly for air movement to aid when wind and ice storms occur. It is important not to over prune a tree. Thinning too much out of a tree's canopy can be detrimental to tree health. Proper pruning also involves the removal of dead limbs, busted or broken limbs, free hanging limbs, and limbs in contact or soon to be in contact with a roof, service wires, or a chimney. These issues need appropriate attention when pruning services are provided. Doing these procedures correctly, time after time, is what Dave's Tree Surgeons is all about.

What about removing a tree?

It is important to recognize the value a tree brings to a property when correctly maintained and kept healthy. Removing a tree is a permanent action. Removal sometimes becomes necessary due to poor tree health, disease, or storm damage. Determining the correct time to remove a tree is serious business. Risk factors to people and property must be considered. A Certified Arborist is trained to know when your tree should be removed, and will usually recommend it as a last resort.

It is important to remember that it takes many years to establish a healthy tree on a property. Most tree services can remove a tree in a day. Many people do not have the luxury of waiting 20 to 30 years for a new tree to get established on their property. This is why it is critical to maintain established trees in a way that will allow them the highest chance for survival.
